The University Modernisation Fund

The VIDaaS Project is receiving funding from the UK's University Modernisation Fund (UMF). The UMF is administered by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) in order to support a sustained increase in student places at universities and colleges by capitalizing on opportunities for greater savings and efficiencies. The total funding available under the initiative comes to £152 million, £12.5 million of which has been earmarked for the UMF Shared Services and the Cloud programme, administered by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC). The JISC are the UK body responsible for the JANET network, providing Higher Education institutions with access to electronic resources, and improving research and teaching through the innovative use of digital technology.

The UMF Shared Services and the Cloud programme is creating a shared IT infrastructure across UK HE institutions, alongside shared services to support administrative functions. The investments in a shared infrastructure is in part going to JANET to set up a national brokerage of 'cloud' computing resources, partly to the Digital Curation Centre (DCC) to offer data management tools and training, and partly to fund projects around the country developing Software as a Service tools which can operate via the cloud. VIDaaS is one of these projects.

The other projects being funded under the same strand are:

  • Eduserv are building a cloud infrastructure that will be able to host the outputs of the UMF projects.

VIDaaS will look to share ideas and experiences with these other projects to help maximise the benefits of the programme as a whole.
